Eating on board is not a niche offering in Amsterdam but a market of its own: it ranges from a 75-minute cruise with pizza to a two-hour four-course menu with table service.

One note up front that saves trouble when booking: the galley on board is small, and the menus are set in advance. So choose your course when you book, and state any intolerances there — not once you are on board. Vegetarian menus are available everywhere, vegan and gluten-free only with advance notice.

Questions and answers

Are there vegetarian and vegan menus?

Practically all dinner cruises offer vegetarian menus; you choose your course when booking. Vegan and gluten-free is usually possible, but only with advance notice — the galley on board is small and works with pre-prepared courses. So enter any intolerances in the notes field when booking, and don't count on being able to sort it out once you are on board.

Are drinks included on the dinner cruise?

With the multi-course menus, as a rule yes — a selection of wine, beer and soft drinks is part of the price. With the cheaper pizza versions, two drinks are usually included and you pay for any more on board. Which applies in each case is set out in the provider's description of what is included.

Is a dinner cruise suitable for children?

The multi-course menus mean two hours at the table — long for younger children. The pancake boat from Amsterdam North is a better fit: buffet instead of menu, a 75-minute cruise and an area to play in on board. You get there from Centraal Station on the free ferry.

Do you need to book a canal cruise in advance?

For the classic cruise in the off season, not necessarily — you can walk to the jetty and buy a ticket for the next departure. In high season, at weekends and on public holidays you should reserve: the popular cruises regularly sell out then, and queues form at the ticket desks by Centraal Station. For all the smaller boats, for cruises with a live guide and for anything with food or drinks, one rule applies: book ahead without fail. These boats have twelve to thirty seats and are often full days in advance.

How long does a canal cruise take?

Most cruises last an hour to 75 minutes. Evening cruises are often a little longer at 90 minutes. Dinner cruises with a multi-course menu take two hours. A full circuit of the Hop-on-Hop-off boat takes about 100 minutes, though the ticket is valid for 24 or 48 hours. The exact duration is listed with every tour on this site.

Still undecided?

Most visitors are well served by the classic one-hour cruise — it is the cheapest and runs most often. If you want a bit more, take a small open boat with a live guide.
